"Recuperation" (20x14 in.), $900.00
One summer day while cleaning windows in our enclosed back porch, I heard a “Thud!” from one of the windows behind me. I suspected a bird strike and upon turning around I saw 1 feather floating in mid air and another jammed between the frame and the glass. Going outside to confirm this, all doubt was erased with the seemingly lifeless body of a chipping sparrow beneath the window. As I picked it up and put it in the palm of my hand, surprising to me both of its eyes opened. I gently rubbed it behind the neck and it began coming around, sitting upright in my hand. I put it down on the top step leading to the porch and got back to my window washing chores, frequently coming in and out of the door while “Chips” kept its eye on me. My work then took me inside the porch for quite a while and not seeing me but hearing me caused Chips to fly up and sit on the edge of the window opening where I had taken the screen off. I put my hand out to it, it jumped on it and I took it outside to place it on a branch in a white spruce to recuperate. He was there for about a half hour and then flew away.
