"Suspended Animation?" (24 x 18 in.), $1500.00

An optical illusion was created by low fog just above the water as the 678-foot S/S Wilfred Sykes dropped anchor between the Duluth Piers in Duluth, MN and the south shore of Lake Superior. Normally that south shoreline of neighboring Superior, WI is very visible from this point but the atmospheric effects of fog, mist and heavy cloud cover have made all that disappear along with the lake beyond the ore carrier, giving the appearance that the vessel is levitating above the water. The Sykes is waiting for the S/S Arthur M. Anderson to complete loading iron ore at CN Duluth in west Duluth before shifting over there to load the same. As the late evening deep, blue violet colors progress into the navy blue near blackness of nightfall, the scene over the top of the South Pier makes the Sykes appear as if it were is in suspended animation, hovering and floating over the water. The darkening skies add to it all, making for an even more ominous, spooky scene. Afterall, this just happened to be Halloween 2021.
