Just after sunset on the evening of August 11, 2015, the enormous 1004 foot M/V Edgar B. Speer slips by the much smaller 135 foot tug/barge Ken Boothe Sr./Lakes Contender in the St. Clair River. The downbound Speer of CN’s Great Lakes Fleet dwarfs the tug/barge of Van Enkevort Tug and Barge Co. and is heading for U.S. Steel’s unloading facility at Conneaut, OH on the south side of Lake Erie. The Speer has loaded over 63,000 tons of iron ore pellets at BNSF #5 in Superior, WI that will be railed to U.S. Steel’s Edgar Thompson Works in Braddock, PA. The tug/barge was renamed in 2017 and now sails as the Clyde S. Van Enkevort.
