White Pine Hill

"White Pine Hill"
(20x14 in.), $1800.00

As the November sun creeps over the tree tops, a group of ruffed grouse use a huge, fallen white pine as their morning meeting place. The 2 on top of the moss-covered log enjoy the sun’s warmth on a crisp start to the day in an isolated area of northeastern Minnesota while the grouse down below searches for grit to help digest a breakfast of alder buds. After all 3 birds flew, a closer look revealed that this was a multi-purpose log; a large pile of old droppings indicated that this was probably also used by one of the males as a drumming log to establish territory.
