 December Light Show

December Light Show
(24.5 x 18.5 in.) $5500.00

While sailing the Great Lakes in December can be extremely dangerous at times from ice, wind and storms, this evening is not one of those times. The S/S Phillip R. Clarke is making its way across a near calm Lake Huron after unloading iron ore pellets in Conneaut, OH. Now upbound to load limestone at Rogers City, MI for Duluth, MN, a spectacular, colorful sunset eventually gives way to the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights, as the setting sun disappears and the skies darken. At first the countless stars show up, seemingly one by one as dusk settles in, then the real show of the Aurora. Ask any Great Lakes sailor who has sailed enough and they'll tell you that late fall and early winter storms across the Great Lakes clear the summer atmosphere of humidity, pollutants and haze giving way to skies that allow for incredible viewing. Those crisp, clear nights from October through January grant unbelievable panoramas of the stars and Northern Lights.
