Reminiscent of a WW II submarine, this painted turtle has risen to periscope depth, exposing only the tip of his head as he surveys the surroundings of Lake Hayward on the Namekagon River of northwestern Wisconsin. It is March 2012 and generally the lake has 2 feet of ice on it at this time but an early spring has the turtles out and about as if it were mid summer.
